Entrevista a Carrie Elks

HT: What made you start writing? (O que a levou a começar a escrever?)
Carrie Elks: I’ve always loved reading books, and it felt like a natural progression to try writing one. The first time I tried to write a book I was a teenager, and it wasn’t very good! I then tried on and off for years, and only really became serious about writing in 2013, when I wrote Fix You (Foste Sempre Tu in Portugal). Since then I’ve written a number of books, and have been fortunate enough to have 5 of them published so far!

HT: Where do you get your ideas to the books?
Carrie Elks: My ideas nearly always start with the characters. I often visualise a scene where there’s conflict between the hero and heroine, and from there I have to work backwards and find out why there’s conflict and what made the characters behave that way. Fix You (Foste Sempre Tu) is the perfect example of this – in the prologue there is a big argument between Richard and Hanna, and the book then explores how they first meet and build up to this scene. In other books the conflict may take place later in the story, but it’s always there.

HT: How does your writing process works: believe in inspiration or have a pre-arranged time to write?
Carrie Elks: It’s a little bit of both. I try to write every day; it’s a good habit to get into and I do believe that it’s the only way to get a book finished. But I still have good days and bad days – sometimes I’ll only end up with a few hundred words, and on other days I’ll write 5000 words and they flow perfectly. Either way, it takes a lot of hard work and determination to write a book!

HT: Of all his books, you can choose the one that gave him more pleasure to write?
Carrie Elks: Probably Fix You (Foste Sempre Tu). The story seemed to flow very easily, and I fell in love with the characters of Richard and Hanna almost straight away. From the moment I wrote the prologue I was eager to find out why they hated each other so much – and that made writing the book so much fun!
(Provavelmente Fix You (Foste Semper Tu).

HT: What changed in your life after the release of the first book?
Carrie Elks: Not very much, really! Fix You was first released in Brazil in October 2014 (it wasn’t released in the UK until December 2014) – and although I got a lot of lovely Facebook messages from my Brazilian readers, it didn’t change my every day life. I just got on with writing the next book, being a mum and working at my job!

HT: I assume you also enjoy reading. What are your favorite writers? (Deduzo que também goste de ler. Quais os seus escritores preferidos?)
Carrie Elks: Reading books is my favourite thing to do! I love all genres, but in particular I enjoy women’s fiction and romance. My current favourite writers are Julie Cohen, Mhairi McFarlane and Sarah Morgan. All of them write beautifully, and have great stories and characters!

HT: Finally, what are your writing projects for the future?
Carrie Elks: In the UK I have 3 more books in my new Shakespeare Sisters series to release (the first, Summer’s Lease, released in July 2017 in the UK and USA. A Winter’s Tale, the second in the series, releases in November 2017). There are 4 books in the series, and each book tells the story of one of the sisters. I’ve really enjoyed writing this series, and can’t wait for them all to be released.
This new series will also be published in Brazil, France and Turkey, and I will hopefully have news of a Portuguese release soon!
